I have seen the "it is their property argument" but remember that as far as history goes there has never been this much control on content, we even had laws to help facilitate things to enter into the public domain (other discussion entirely). I don't have an answer to the problem, maybe a library of congress for computer code? I don't think this is a problem that really anyone cares much to try and solve. Losing access to that culture is horrible. I know there are those that think games are just useless time wasters, even if they are they are still a part of culture. We can move to music, all of The Beetles music 10 years after the fact all of the ways to listen to the music gone. Lets say the works of Shakespeare, no one any longer has access to those works. Imagine, if you can, some books needed some other service to be read, not just encrypted but where you could actually see the book. I see this as a huge black hole of and extreme loss of culture. Games that heavily rely on servers for functionality. that is locked up in DRM gated inaccessible forms. There is tons of content, media, interaction, etc. I am going to give you my opinion on this in a societal impact. This is what I really meant to say.chill haters. The players of these games pay for the computer to play it on, the internet connection, the game, the monthly sub (sometimes in multiples for more than one sub) and your invaluable amount of time you put into it.

I think it should be written into the TOS for all MMO's that if the game goes offline that the company has to make the server files public for the next few months so people could at least make an attempt to keep the game going themselves.Įdit: Sorry about how I worded it but in the end what I really meant is we need a way for these MMO's to continue legally if the game is being shutdown and if the community is willing to do so.too many people put in thousands upon thousands of hours and thousands of dollars into these games to have them flop with absolutely nothing for loyal fans in the end.I don't care how its done but it should be done in my opinion.

Why shouldn't the community of an MMO thats going offline, even if its just a small MMO, get the ability to create there own servers? People spend thousands and thousands of hours in games and pay monthly subs plus purchasing the games themselves all too often to have the game go in the shitter. Warhammer is going offline today.and by god it was a great pvp game for sometime.
